Updates from East Side House

Greetings YABC students, alumni and other family members,

Apologies that it has been so long since our last blog post. It has been a very busy couple of months for the ESH team and Lehman YABC! Here are some updates:

In January, our beloved Roxanna moved on to an advanced position within East Side House as a College Counselor for the Lehman High School Success Center! In her new role, she is working with students from all of the day school programs within Lehman High School to explore college options, make post-secondary choices and prepare student leaders to assist their peers with college planning. We miss having her as part of our team but are lucky to still have her within East Side House and within the Lehman Campus! We wish her all of the best in her new role and the hunt is out for a new Advisor to fill Roxanna’s role. As we meet potential candidates, we hope students will be involved to give us feedback on new staff members.

The end of the Fall Semester meant that over 35 YABC students have graduated. Congrats! As the Spring Semester has begun, we have welcomed over 40 new students to our YABC program as well. It is always exciting to see students succeed and move on to new experiences as well as invite new students to join our family.

With the spring in session, our basketball season has begun! Coach Brian and the basketball team fought hard in their first game against Ellis Prep last Friday and will take the experiences gained into their next game on Saturday, April 1st at George Washington YABC. The game begins at 2 PM. Hope to see you there!  (Any students interested in joining the basketball team should see Coach Brian in the ESH Office ASAP to get a physical form.)

We are also looking forward to two upcoming college trips: This Friday, March 24th we will be visiting Old Westbury and SUNY Stonybrook, two public universities on Long Island. The bus will leave at 8:30 AM on Friday 3/24 and we will return the same day at approximately 4:30 PM.

Save the date for our overnight college tour to Boston on May 5th & 6th. Keep checking on the blog and in the East Side House Office as we begin sign-ups and announce the selection process.

Thanks for helping us kick off a successful Spring semester and stay tuned for more announcements and activities! We have a lot more in the works- trips over Spring Break, Honor Roll awards, PROM and more!!

-Hiedi Sheffer, Program Director
